Davidoff Launching Brazilian Smoke

Davidoff Launching Brazilian Smoke

Davidoff of Geneva is preparing to unveil a new cigar made with a generous complement of Brazilian tobaccos.

The cigar, which has a name that Davidoff is keeping secret for the time being, will be presented to retailers this summer at the International Cigar & Pipe Retailers trade show in New Orleans.

Charles Awad, senior vice president of global marketing and innovation at Oettinger Davidoff Group, says the cigar was inspired by the country of Brazil, specifically nights in Rio de Janeiro.

“It’s for those who are in the mood to explore,” said Awad, during a meeting this morning at Cigar Aficionado headquarters.

The sizes in the line are geared to be relatively quick smokes, all of them less than six inches long. There are three shapes: Short Robusto, measuring 3 1/4 inches long by 50 ring gauge; Robusto Tubo, 4 1/2 by 54; and Gran Toro, 5 1/2 by 58. Pricing will be similar to Davidoff Nicaragua, which retails for $10 to $18.

While it has a great amount of Brazilian tobacco ("a nice chunk of the blend," in the words of Awad) the cigar, which also has tobacco from Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, was rolled in the Dominican Republic. The cigar was blended by master blenders Henke Kelner and Eladio Diaz, and is meant to be "spicy sweet," with a rhythm and intensity to the smoking experience. The artwork for the smoke features a stylized moon in yellow and green on a black background, some of the colors on the Brazilian flag, with the tagline "rhythm, intrigue, originality."

This Davidoff is the second in what Davidoff corporate is referring to as its “Black Series” of cigars—the first was Davidoff Nicaragua, which debuted in 2013. Davidoff Nicaragua has been a success both commercially and critically, and the Davidoff Nicaragua Toro was Cigar Aficionado’s No. 3 cigar of 2014, with a score of 95 points, classic on our 100-point scale.
