Canon D10 Digital Camera

| By Entourage, July/August 2009

Some of life's most appealing photo opportunities, the ones with bikini-clad beach babes or children splashing in the pool or snowball fights or daring mogul-jumping skiers, all take place in settings that can quickly turn an ordinary camera into a pricey digital paperweight. Canon recently focused on the problem and came up with a solution for snagging those hard-to-get shots without risk to your equipment. The PowerShot D10 digital camera combines ruggedly waterproof, shockproof, freeze-proof performance with a design that's sure to attract onlookers' eager attention (did we mention bikini-clad babes?).

The Canon PowerShot D10 is a 12.1-megapixel compact camera that remains waterproof down to 33 feet (10 meters), so it can not only withstand the occasional spritz or snowflake, but even go snorkeling and scuba diving. Cold is no threat either, with a camera that keeps shooting down to a frigid 14° F and up to 104°. Butter-fingered photographers will be grateful that the D10 shakes off shocks from up to four-foot heights. And if you drop it in the water, it floats.

The D10 has some serious photographic features, including a 3x optical zoom lens that works well in low-light situations and optical image stabilization that counteracts the blur from shaky hands that is sure to accompany shooting in active environments. But it doesn't look serious, and that's part of the fun. The D10 has a witty, well-rounded design, with big, well-placed buttons you can manipulate even while busy swimming, surfing or skiing. It looks a bit like a submarine, and even complements the typical digital-camera-silver with a perfect aquatic blue color. (If that's not your style, get the optional front cover set that lets you switch out the sea-colored with three choices, one of which, of course, is camouflage.)

Of course, having a camera that can stand up to the elements won't do you much good if it slips from your grip and gets lost. Here again, Canon has you covered. While the D10 ($329.99) comes standard with one of those ordinary sissy wrist loops, it also lets you bolt on optional accessory straps, including a hefty shoulder/neck strap and a carabiner that keeps the camera securely tethered to you while you're using your hands for the rugged life.
