We live in a world of on-demand sound. Between your purchased MP3s and music services like Pandora, Spotify and Rhapsody, there’s almost nothing you can’t call up and listen to with your smartphone or tablet. The problem starts when the party begins. What do you do if you want to share that sound with guests? Earbuds are ridiculous and the tinny speakers on tablets won’t do a soaring guitar solo any justice. You could find the right input on your amplifier and pump out the tunes that way. But then you’re tethered to the sound system and you’ve given up some of the portable charm of your personal device.

Ah, but lest we forget, any phone or tablet worth its gigabytes sports Bluetooth pairing, which is where the magic of Edifier’s Spinnaker amplified speaker system bows in. Connecting to your device happens in moments. Just turn on Bluetooth in the settings feature, wait for it to discover Edifier and connect. Now just choose a tune and listen to it spill out of the odd-shaped speakers.

The warped-cone design is inspired by the look of spinnaker sails that yachts use to race downwind, but they are more than just an interesting look. The speakers are designed to project sound towards the listener. The front-facing tweeters and mid-range drivers are reinforced with a downward firing bass driver in each speaker. The company explains that the shape stops internal standing waves and resonances from collecting and boasts of tri-amping (one amp each for the tweeters, mid-range and bass speakers) as well as electronic crossover. If that sounds like stereo mumbo- jumbo, it translates into excellent sound with a hearty bass in a two-part package that stands only 16½ inches high and sells for $299.99.

Another great feature is the wide range of connectivity that comes with the Edifier. Optical input lets you hook up to multimedia systems, gaming consoles and a media center. Another input allows you to run external devices through its sound system. And, should you somehow need even more bass, you can blow it through a separate subwoofer.

The size of the system makes it quite portable. So if the party should converge outside for a smoke, just pick up and bring the sounds with you.
