Saucy New Diesel Heading To Retailers

Do you call it “sauce” or do you call it “gravy”? It’s a trivial argument about the stuff we put on pasta, yet one that seems to persist in households across America. Now, the gravy-sauce debate has spilled over into the cigar world thanks to a collaboration between Forged Cigar Co.

Called Diesel Sunday Gravy, the new cigar is made in Nicaragua by Fernandez and is composed of an Ecuador Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder from Estelí and Nicaraguan filler from Jalapa.

Brand manager Justin Andrews worked with Fernandez to stir up the blend and likened cigar production to his mother’s methods of simmering the perfect Sunday sauce.

“His process actually reminds me of my mom and how she cooked her Sunday sauce slowly over a low flame, knowing she had the luxury of being able to cook all day on a Sunday to get it just right,” Andrews said. “The comparison to cooking inspired the name of this new collaboration with A.J., and it’s actually very similar to his approach.”

Sunday Gravy is a single-size toro that measures 6 inches by 54 ring gauge. In keeping with the cigar’s saucy theme, it goes by the name San Marzano, referencing the prized tomatoes grown in Italy’s San Marzano region.

Forged Cigar Co., a distribution arm of Scandinavian Tobacco Group, will be releasing the smokes on August 12 in packs of 10 that are set to retail for $49.90, or $4.99 per cigar, but production is limited and this is the first in a planned series. The next Sunday Gravy blend is expected to come out in October.
