Selected Tobacco Doubles Down On Aging With 10-Year-Old Atabey Cigars

Aging tobacco is a nuanced topic in the cigar industry and one without a definitive set of rules. Selected Tobacco is no stranger to aging methods, and according to its owner, Nelson Alfonso, the company typically ages its cigars for five years in a cedar-lined room after rolling. But for this new, limited-edition Atabey Dioses 10-Year Extra Aged, the cigarmaker says he’s doubled down, aging the cigars for a decade.
The Atabey brand was officially introduced in 2010 with just three sizes, which were rolled in 2005 before undergoing a five-year aging process. The Atabey line is now up to 12 vitolas in total, including the Dioses, a double corona that measures 8 inches long by 50 ring gauge, which was first rolled in 2013 then officially introduced to the rest of the Atabey line in 2018 after five years of aging.
The Atabey Dioses 10-Year Extra Aged cigars are from the same batch of the initial Dioses rolled in 2013, (subsequent releases of Dioses were only aged for five years). The cigars feature the same blend as the rest of the Atabey line, with Ecuadoran Habano wrappers and some Peruvian Ligero in the filler. The rest of the blend remains undisclosed.
Production is limited to 370, 25-count boxes, or 9,250 cigars in total. The suggested retail price is $36 per cigar or $900 a box. The cigars are made at Tabacos de Costa Rica factory in Santiago de Puriscal, Costa Rica.
The Dioses will be available for purchase at the PCA trade show next month and will ship to retailers shortly after. Like all Selected Tobacco cigars, the Dioses are distributed by United Cigars out of New Hampshire.
